Dmitrii Maksimov is a navigation officer and photographer. He was born in Arkhangelsk, Russia in 1994, lives in St. Petersburg, works on a merchant vessel, and travels around the world.
Almost simultaneously, he first held both a ship’s wheel and a camera — since then, the maritime profession and photography have gone hand in hand.
In his works, Dmitrii turns to the urban landscape: seagoing vessels and port infrastructure, deserted urban spaces and semi-abandoned places, captured in twilight.
His creative pseudonym Sole Lookout refers to the maritime term of the same name. This metaphor defines his artistic approach — to carefully observe and record the surrounding space, recreating an atmosphere of silence, unease, and solitude.
